ARLINGTON -- Mrs. Ruth A. (White) Rice, 82, a resident of Oak Knoll Road, died unexpectedly Monday afternoon, July 3, 2006, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center. Mrs. Rice was born in Arlington on Nov. 13, 1923. She was the daughter of the late Emery R. and Cora P. (Bromley) White. She spent her childhood in Arlington, where she attended the local schools.

She was married to Walter M. Rice on Feb. 23, 1941. Together they raised seven children. Mr. Rice predeceased her on May 26, 2005. In earlier years, she worked as a waitress and cook at the former Green Mountain Diner in Arlington and also as a chambermaid in the Manchester area. Mrs. Rice was a longtime member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 69 of Arlington.

Following Mr. Rice’s retirement, they relocated to Deland, Fla., where Mrs. Rice became an Avon representative, selling Avon products for 28 years. She also enjoyed being a member of the senior bowling league at Deland Bowl. The Rices returned to Arlington in 2003. Following Mr. Rice’s passing, Mrs. Rice resided with her daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Daniel Zimmer.

Mrs. Rice had always been very family oriented, putting her family in the forefront of her life. She will be remembered as a wonderful mother and caretaker, and the many crocheted pieces she made for the family will also be cherished.

She leaves her three sons, Edward Rice, USAF retired, and his wife, Shirley, of Deland, Walter Rice and his wife, Judy, of Vergennes and William Rice and his wife, Cheryl, of North Bennington; three daughters, Beverly O’Dell of Wilkes-Barre, Pa., Sandra Zimmer and her husband, Daniel, of Arlington and Joanne Clayton and her husband, Larry, of Arlington; a sister, Grace Marks of San Diego, Calif.; 22 grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Rice was predeceased by a daughter, Cheryl Charpentier, a sister, Evelyn Rice, and brother, Raymond White.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 6, at 1 p.m. at the Arlington chapel of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home on Route 7A in Arlington. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from noon until the hour of the service.

Mrs. Rice will be laid to rest next to her husband on Friday at the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, N.Y.
