NORTH BENNINGTON -- Ruth Marie Brownell, 78, a resident of White Creek Road in North Bennington, died on Monday afternoon, March 13, 2006, at her home surrounded by her family.

She was born in North Bennington on Dec. 12, 1927, and was the daughter of the late Edward and Theresa (Sweet) Cook. She received her education in local schools. On Dec. 11, 1942, she married Augustine Brownell. Mr. Brownell survives. They had just celebrated their 63rd anniversary. Over the years she has been employed at Thomson Manufacturing Co. and Polygraphic in North Bennington. Ruth has also worked in the kitchen at Prospect Nursing Home in North Bennington, and over the last several years has helped her husband and family in operating Brownell Junkyard in North Bennington.

Ruth was a go-kart driver at the former track in Pownal and a stockcar driver at the Stateline Speedway. She enjoyed playing bingo, and bowling at Bennington Lanes. She was a member of the Business and Professional Women’s Organization, she was a member of the Owlkill Rod and Gun Club Auxiliary in Eagle Bridge, N.Y., and she enjoyed traveling with the seniors on their various excursions.

But her favorite interest was her family and all the grandchildren.

Survivors besides her husband include two sons and daughters-in-law, Augustine and Jane Brownell Jr. of North Hoosick, N.Y., and William and Loretta Brownell, also of North Hoosick; four daughters and one son-in-law, Gloria Harrington of Cambridge, N.Y., Virginia Harrington of Cambridge, Diane and Ray Harrington Sr. of Eagle Bridge, N.Y., and Phyllis Taylor of North Bennington. She also is survived by Rose Telford of White Creek and Joe David of North Bennington, whom she helped raise. Ruth also is survived by three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Isabel and Francis Moon of Buskirk, N.Y., June and Larry LeBarron of Pittsfield, Mass., and Ida Eggsware of Bennington. She leaves 22 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.

She is predeceased by one son, Tony Brownell; four brothers, Bob, Jack, Guy and Charles; and one sister, Betty.

Funeral services for Ruth will be held on Friday, March 17, at 12 p.m. at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home in Bennington. Her son Augustine will be conducting the services.

Interment will follow in the family lot in Rosewood Cemetery in White Creek.

Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of the services.
