SHUSHAN, N.Y. -- Ruth McCauley Law, 77, of Chunks Brook Road, died peacefully, Monday, Aug. 18, 2003, at Southern Vermont Hospital in Bennington. She was the widow of Lawrence A. McCauley and of Andrew Roberson “Bob” Law, who died in 2000.

Born July 24, 1926 in Johnson City, she was the only child of Harry M. and Bess (Cornell) Jacobs. She grew up in Scotia, and graduated from Scotia High School. She entered the Cadet Nurse Corps at Plattsburgh Teachers College during World War II. While doing part of her clinical rotation at Mary McClellan Hospital in Cambridge, she met and married Lawrence A. McCauley in 1948. Mr. McCauley was killed in an equipment accident in 1955. Ruth married Bob Law and moved to his family farm in Shushan in 1958.

In her career at Mary McClellan Hospital as a registered nurse, Ruth served the community in various positions of responsibility, including night shift supervisor and operation room nurse manager. At the time of her retirement in 1998, she was the nursing coordinator for Hospice of Washington County.

A devoted member of the Shushan United Methodist Church, Ruth was a lay minister, a member of the United Methodist Women and an officer in the Embury UMW. She was the lay member from the church to the Troy Conference and was a member of the Emmaus community of the Conference.

Ruth enjoyed reading and traveling. She also took great pleasure in the Batten Kill, which borders the family’s farm. Ruth’s greatest joys in life were her family and friends.

She is survived by six children, Dr. Pamela McCauley of Florence, Ariz., Douglas McCauley of East Arlington, Vt., Dr. Robert Law, of Buckingham, Pa., Arnold Law of Garland, Texas, Howard Law of Shushan and Arlene Law of West Arlington, Vt.; two step-children, Larry McCauley of Salem, and Barbara Shaffer of Galway; 21 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Friends and relatives are invited to call on Thursday, Aug. 21, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Ackley & Ross Funeral Home, 73 West Main St., Cambridge.

The funeral service will be on Friday, Aug. 22, at 2 p.m. at the Shushan United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at the West Arlington Cemetery.
