BENNINGTON -- Ruth Smythe Gall, 93, a resident of the Village at Fillmore Pond, Bennington, died Friday, Jan. 6, 2006, at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation in Bennington, following a brief illness.

Mrs. Gall was born in Waltham, Mass., on Oct. 22, 1912. She was the daughter of Charles J. Tuttle and Hattie Harris. Ruth graduated from Waltham High School, and attended one year of nursing school.

She was an avid craftswoman and hobbyist, and shared her love of painting and drawing with both children and adults. She loved sports in her youth and was active in the Girl Scouts for many years. Mrs. Gall was predeceased by her first husband, the Rev. Edwin A. Randle, who died in 1984, and her second husband, Phillip Smythe, who died in 2000. She is survived by her third husband, Herbert Gall; her three daughters, Nancy Miller of Redding, Calif., Jean Bjurling of Marlboro, Mass., and Mrs. Kathy Hope Pelkey of Hoosick Falls, N.Y.; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Prior to her move to Fillmore Pond, Ruth spent many years in central Massachusetts where she was active in the churches pastored by Reverend Randle. She also lived on Cape Cod, in upstate Maine and Boston. In 2000 she moved from Boston to Bennington where she met and married Herb in 2002 at the age of 87.

While living at Fillmore Pond, Mrs. Gall was an enthusiastic participant in many of the social functions and craft programs at the senior living facility. Crafts were a major part of her life and some of her water-color images were selected to be used on the holiday cards of Fillmore Pond.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 10, at 1 p.m. followed by a prayer service at 2 p.m. in Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, 213 West Main St., Bennington.
