Obituary Condolences

Ruth E. Wetherell 1921 - 2011 SHAFTSBURY Ruth E. Wetherell, 89, a lifelong resident of Shaftsbury, passed away peacefully and quietly, surrounded by her family on Saturday, at Crescent Manor Care Centers in Bennington, following a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease. Born in Bennington on Sept. 25, 1921, she was the daughter of Ralph and Blanche A. Coulter Herrick. She received her education in the Shaftsbury and North Bennington schools. In her early years, she was employed at the former Eagle Square plan. In 1982, she retired from the Shaftsbury Post Office after 30 years of service. On July 4, 1941, she married Almon L. Wetherell, also from Shaftsbury. He passed away in 1997. She enjoyed traveling with her husband to Arizona and Florida in their motor home until the decline of her husband's health forced them to stop. To her enjoyment, she was involved with the Shaftsbury Methodist Church and the Bennington Club. In earlier years, she was a member of the Shaftsbury Fire Department Women's Auxiliary. She enjoyed knitting, doing crossword puzzles and watching the wild animals in her back yard. She always could be seen walking everyday in Shaftsbury with her little dog Shotzie. She is survived by a son, Daryl A. Wetherell, and his wife, Barbara, of Shaftsbury; a grandson, Brandon R. Wetherell, his wife Kara, and her great-grandson, Chase, all of Shaftsbury; two sisters, Ardella Morin of North Bennington and Beatrice Mattison of Shaftsbury; a brother, Arthur Paulin of Shaftsbury, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. A third sister, Marion Carnagey of Springfield, Mo., predeceased her in 2003. FUNERAL NOTICE: At the request of Mrs. Wetherell, there will be no calling hours. Committal services will be held at the family lot in Center Shaftsbury Cemetery on Wednesday, June 29, 2011, at 2 p.m. Should friends desire, contributions in Ruth E. Wetherell's memory may be made to either the Second Chance Animal Shelter or the Shaftsbury Methodist Church through the office of the MAHAR & SON FUNERAL HOME, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
