Sandra M. Slade 1939-2010 BENNINGTON Mrs. Sandra M. Slade, 71, wife of Jay O. Slade, a resident of Orchard Road, Bennington died Thursday, December 16, 2010 at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation following an extended illness. Born in Bennington November 6, 1939, she was the daughter of the late Robert W. and Jean (Thompson) Maynard. Sandra received her education in the Bennington schools and was a 1957 graduate of Bennington High School. Sandra and Jay were married September 12, 1959 at St. Francis de Sales Church in Bennington. Sandra was employed at Gould Jewelers, and later at Tofel Jewelers where she worked as a certified gemologist until the time of her retirement. Sandra had a keen interest in the history of Colonial America. She volunteered at the Peter Matteson Tavern museum on East Road. Dressed in period costume, she demonstrated fireplace cookery to visitors of the museum. Sandra enjoyed attending auctions, collecting antiques, dolls, and Bennington pottery. An avid reader, she enjoyed good books accompanied by her adored cats. Sandra was an accomplished knitter, and took pleasure in sharing that skill with her family. Survivors include her husband, Jay O. Slade of Bennington; a son and daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and Katherine Slade of North Bennington; a daughter, Kristen Slade of Waterville, VT; two grandchildren, Jennifer and Andrew Slade; a sister and brother-in-law, Cheryl and Gregory Jacobs of Bennington, two aunts, an uncle, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Tuesday, December 21, 2010 at 10 a.m. Friends may call at the funeral home Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. Burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.
