Shirley L. Gardner

1933-2010 BENNINGTON Shirley Louise Bump Gardner, 76, a resident of East Main Street in Bennington, died on Tuesday, March 16, 2010, following brief illness.

Born in White Creek, N.Y., on Apr. 7, 1933, daughter of the late Floyd and Florence Gilbar Bump, she received her education in local schools .

She married Richard C. Gardner on July 5, 1949, at the Old First Church in North Bennington. Richard died on Dec. 16, 2008.

Shirley had been a home maker and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Post#13 of Bennington. The Gardner's enjoyed camping and spending time at the Crown Point Campground in Perkinsville, Vt., as well as spending time with her family.

Shirley leaves two sons and daughters-in-law, Richard "Tink" and Joyce Gardner Jr. of Bennington, and Gary and Robin Gardner of Shaftsbury, Vt.; five daughters and sons-in-law, Linda Towne of Bennington, Gail and Edward Elmore of Bradenton, Fla., Sharon Gardner and Robert Harrington of Hoosick Falls, N.Y., Wendy Chenaille and Jim Thurber of Bennington, and Kim and Mike Livingston of Bennington. She also leaves 15 grandchildren, Scott and Stacey Gardner of Port St. Lucie, Fla., Kaylee Gardner and Frank Mulvihill of Hoosick Falls, N.Y., Barry and Amy Richardson Jr. of Shaftsbury, Jeromy and Heather Gardner of Sandgate, Michael Gardner and Kendra Herring of Shaftsbury, Bethany Haynes of Shaftsbury, Jodi and Dan Pratt of Bennington, Lisa and Derek Boynton of Orlando, Fla., Ryan and Kristin Lewis, Zachary and Andre-Anne Chenaille, Jordan Sherman, Bradley Livingston, Tyler Livingston and Nichole Livingston, all of Bennington. Shirley has 11 great- grandchildren, Mattison Marie Mulvihill, Riley Jade Richardson, Matthew Gardner, Shane Haynes, Andre Champagne, Sydney and Jade Boynton, Brodi Lewis, and Colin and Aiden Chellis and Elisia Bolster. Shirley has one sister, Florence Thomas, and one brother, Richard Bump, both of Bennington.

There are two nephews and their spouses, Jack and Mary Gardner of Bennington, and James and Helen Gardner of Dalton, Mass., with several other nieces, and nephews and cousins.

She is predeceased by one sister, Lillian Bump, and three brothers, Harold Gilbar, Robert Bump Sr. and Lorenzo Bump.

FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services will be held on Saturday morning, Mar. 20, at 11 a.m. at THE MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME in Bennington with Kenneth Coonradt, Chaplain of the Vermont Veterans Home, officiating. Interment will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery in Bennington. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday, Mar. 19, from 4-7 p.m.

Members of the American Legion Auxiliary are asked to meet at the funeral home on Friday at 6 p.m. to conduct services.
