Obituary Condolences

BENNINGTON -- Shirley Elaine LaCross, 61, a resident of Pinewood, S.C., and a former long time resident of Bennington, died Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2008, at her residence following a long illness.

Born in Cambridge, Vt., on March 10, 1946, she was the daughter of the late Leslie and Inez (LaPlant) Aiken.

She received her education in the Newport schools.

Shirley married the late John LaCross Sr. on July 20, 1963, in North Bennington. Mr. LaCross died Oct. 21, 1997. In earlier years Shirley was employed at the Crescent Manor Nursing Home in Bennington.

Shirley was a Nana to many of her grandchildren. She enjoyed reading and doing word searches.

Survivors include two sons, John LaCross Jr. and his wife Karen, and Robert “Bob” LaCross and Michelle Violette of Bennington; two daughters, Inez “Sis” Ketchum and her husband Scott of Sumter, S.C., and Sandra Ketcham and her husband Pete of Pinewood; 21 grandchildren, Marcy, Mark, Alvin, Trevor, Perry, Rachel, Jody, Ashley, Chris, David, Jackie, Heidi, Scott, John, Shawn, Erik, Yolonda, Keith, Sheena, Bethany and Cassandra; 20 great-grandchildren, Annicia, Dakota, Jason, Carson, Deven, Isiah, Tanner, Aadya, Bobby III, Karleigh, Ty, Kylie, Sandy, Kasidy, Erik Jr., Amelia, Shayden, and Keegan; two sisters, Darlene Harwood and Kuloa Capen, both of Bennington; two brothers, Leslie Aiken Jr. and David LaPlant Sr., both of Bennington; her best friend, Ann Hamilton of Bennington; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Shirley was predeceased by a sister, Tilli “Kitty” Aiken and a brother, Alvin Aiken.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008 at 4 p.m. A reception will follow the service at the American Legion Post 13 in Bennington.

Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home on Saturday from 2 p.m. until the time of the service.

Private committal services will take place at the family lot in White Chapel Cemetery at the convenience of the family.
