Shirley Ann Decker Matteson 1933-2011 ARLINGTON, VT Shirley Ann (Decker) Matteson, 77, a resident of Fields Road in Manchester Center, Vermont passed away Friday February 25, 2011 at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington, Vt. Shirley was born in West Arlington, Vt., on November 25, 1933 the daughter of Clarence J. and D. Belle (Jones) Decker and attended local schools. She graduated from the Thompson School of Nursing in Brattleboro as an LPN and also taught Diversified Occupation at Burr and Burton Seminary in Manchester. Shirley married Maurice W. Matteson on January 2, 1954 and with her husband, traveled extensively while Maurice was serving in the United States Army. Shirley enjoyed making crafts, especially knitting and crocheting. She donated afghan blankets to Happy Days Pre-School, Equinox Terrace, the Animal Shelters and the Vermont Veterans Home. She also knitted hats for cancer patients. Shirley was the area coordinator for ASSE (American Scandinavian Student Exchange) and was owner and operator of Matteson's Taxi. She was very involved and a member of the Vermont State Grange, which also included Ethan Allen Pomona Grange #27, and Mettowee Valley Grange #373. She was Past State Grange Lecturer, Past Master Battenkill Grange #487, member of the Vermont State Grange Youth Committee and the Vermont State Grange Agriculture Committee. Shirley is survived by her husband Maurice W. Matteson of Manchester, Vermont, her children Theodore Matteson and his wife Sherry of Indian Harbour Beach, Florida, M. Jacob Matteson and his wife Mickey of Matanoras, Pennsylvania, Steven Matteson of Bennington, Sandrya Matteson and her life partner Nancy Sauter of Hoosick Falls, New York, and Deborah Whitman and her husband Robert of Arlington, her sister Phyllis Mason and her husband Charles of Pawlet, Vermont, her brother Clarence J. Decker, III and his wife Elaine of Pawlet, Vermont eighteen grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and many nieces nephews and cousins. FUNERAL NOTICE: A celebration of the life of Shirley Ann (Decker) Matteson will be held Friday March 18, at 2 p.m. at the Chapel, on The Green in West Arlington. David Adams will conduct the service. There are no visiting hours. Interment will be held in the spring in the family lot in Ira Allen Cemetery in Sunderland, Vermont.
