NORTH BENNINGTON -- Mrs. Shirley S. Hewitt, 80, wife of Merritt S. Hewitt, a resident of Harvest Hills Drive, died Friday, Dec. 3, 2004, at her residence.

Born in Bellows Falls April 18, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Roy and Mary (Houghton) Smith. She received her education in the Lee, Mass. schools and was a 1941 graduate of Lee High School. She later graduated from Berkshire Business School in Pittsfield. Shirley and Merritt were married in Lee on June 27, 1942.

Shirley was active with her husband in various family businesses over the years. They first owned and operated the Double TT Dairy in Shaftsbury for many years and also owned Double TT Realty, where Shirley and Merritt were both licensed brokers. After the dairy business closed, Double TT Realty were the developers of the Harvest Hill development in Shaftsbury.

While Shirley’s husband was a member of both the Vermont House of Representatives and the Vermont Senate, Shirley was active in supporting him in these positions. In later years, prior to her retirement, she was employed in the guidance department at Mount Anthony Union High School in Bennington.

Over the years, Shirley was a very active member of the Old First Church in Bennington and was a former deacon at the church. She was a volunteer at the Bennington Museum and a member of the Manchester Country Club for 17 years and a member of the Red Hat Society. Shirley sang in the Bennington County Choral Society for many years. She enjoyed flowers in warm weather and hooking rugs in cold weather.

Survivors include her husband, Merritt S. Hewitt of North Bennington; four children, Sandra M. Hewitt and her husband Anthony Bell of Napa, Calif., Malcolm M. Hewitt and his wife Loreen of Sharon, Mass., Karen B. Hewitt of Sharon and Brian M. Hewitt of Saco, Maine; five grandchildren, Eric, Jessica, Talia, Anna and Shelby; a sister, Barbara Bracknell of Stockbridge, Mass.; and a niece, Robin Fox of Nashua, N.H. Shirley was predeceased by a daughter, Joyce Hewitt.

Memorial services celebrating the life of Shirley S. Hewitt will be held from the Old First Church in Old Bennington on Tuesday, Dec. 7, at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Scott Barton, pastor, officiating.

Burial will take place in the family lot in Grandview Cemetery, North Bennington, where private committal services will be held at the convenience of the family.
