Stanley H. Burnham

BENNINGTON -- Stanley Hubert Burnham, 86, a resident of Houghton Lane, died Thursday evening, May 12, 2005, at Bennington Health and Rehabilitation Center where he had resided since January. Mr. Burnham was born in North Pomfret on Nov. 24, 1918. He grew up with his family in Hartford where he attended local schools. As a young man he was a World War II Army veteran and had been involved in the invasion of Normandy. He was married to Marguerite Porter in the Sharon Congregational Church on Dec. 8, 1946. In earlier years he had worked on farms in the Sharon area and at Dewey’s Mills in Queeche. Upon relocating to Bennington in the early 1960s, they purchased the Harwood Hill Schoolhouse and converted it to their present home. For several years he had worked at Bennington College from which he retired. He was a 50 year member of Masonic Lodge 105 in Sharon and attended meetings at the Tucker Lodge F&AM in North Bennington. He was a member of American Legion Post 13 and the Federated Church of East Arlington, and he was a past member of the Bennington Club. Mr. Burnham was a very good dancer and loved to play cards, especially cribbage.

He leaves his wife Marguerite Burnham of Bennington and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was the brother of Fay Burnham, Roger Burnham, Vernon Burnham, Wendall Burnham, Lyman Burnham, Hazen Burnham, Katherine Vaughn and Hazel Therriault.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 17, at 11 a.m. at The Federated Church of East Arlington with the Rev. Thomas Truscott interim pastor officiating. A time of fellowship and refreshment will follow in the church’s Bailey Hall. Burial with committal prayers will take place on Wednesday, May 18 at 1 p.m. at the Porter family lot in Pine Hill Cemetery in Sharon. Friends may call at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, 213 West Main St., Bennington on Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. when the family will be present.

Memorial gifts in memory of Mr. Burnham may be made to Second Chance Animal Center in care of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, 213 West Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.
