Stanley B. Shields

1925 - 2014 CAMBRIDGE, N.Y. Stanley Benjamin Shields, 89, of Hedges Lake, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 10, 2014, at Albany Medical Center. Stanley was born in Cambridge on Jan. 30, 1925, the son of the late Malcolm and Hazel Skellie Shields. He attended Cambridge Union School and at the age of 18, while still in high school, he was drafted into the military during WW II in the Pacific Conflict; Hawaii and Okinawa. Stanley served with the 130th U.S Naval Construction Battalion (Seabees). In service duty, Stanley played his French horn with the military band during his military time. After active duty, Stanley returned to graduate from high school and worked short term for GE in Albany. From 1947 to 1970, Stanley worked with his father, Malcolm, running the family farm. In 1970, Stanley worked at the Mary McClellan Hospital until retirement in 1990. Stanley was a member of the Shushan United Presbyterian Church and sang in the choir. He was also a member of the Cambridge Band for over 60 years; a member of the Captain Maxson Post 634 American Legion; the Shushan Grange and the Cambridge Valley Lodge 481. Stanley loved to play his horn and caretake the lawns at the Lake. He was most looking forward to his trip to Washington, DC; a trip honoring WW II veterans. Stanley is survived by his sister, Jane E. Hayden of Cambridge; nieces, Lindalee, Corinne & Kimberly Hayden; nephew, David (Kathy) Hayden; great nieces and nephews, Ashley, Regan, Allison, Tyler, Joshua, Aletha, Ethan, Bradley & William; great-great-nieces and nephews, Trinity, Jack, Colin, Theo, Hayden, Taylor, Carson, Madison, Luke, Charlie, Jane, Jaxon & Ella. FUNERAL NOTICE: Relatives and friends may call on Friday, March 14, 2014, from 12 to 2 p.m. at the Shushan United Presbyterian Church. A memorial service will begin at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Tom Davis officiating. A reception will follow the service in the church hall. Interment with military honors will be at the Evergreen Cemetery at a later date.
