Obituary Condolences

Stephen W. Wright 1935 - 2008 DEER ISLE, MAINE Stephen W. Wright died peacefully at the Deer Isle Nursing Home on April 11, 2008 with his wife and two children at his side. Born on Dec. 13, 1935, son of Gladys Duncan and Stephen W. Wright III, he was raised in Trenton, N.J., and later earned a bachelor of science degree in accounting from Rider College. He served in the Army National Guard. Following graduation and his service, he was employed as the corporate controller for Inductotherm Corporation. During that time, he met and married his wife, Barbara. They lived in Riverton, N.J., where Steve was a member of the Board of Education. In 1971, the couple and their two children moved to Norwell, Mass., where Steve worked as the corporate controller of H.P. Hood. He later joined Keyes Fibre Co. in Waterville, Maine, again as a corporate controller. During that time, they lived in Kents Hill. In 1985, Steve and his family moved to Bennington, Vt., where he was vice president and treasurer of Fairdale Farms and later vice president and treasurer of H. Greenburg and Son, a lumber and home supply company. There was nothing Stephen loved more than being involved in community service. He was active in the Rotary Club, United Way, Mount Anthony Preservation Society, a conservation organization; Beyond War, which encouraged peaceful resolution of conflict; and B.A.S.E., an organization of volunteers to provide professional expertise to budding entrepreneurs in the area. Steve and Barbara enjoyed summer stays in their cottage in Sunshine on Deer Isle for several years before moving permanently to the island in 2001. In his retirement, Steve spent many happy hours sailing and tinkering on his 25-foot sailboat, playing golf, hiking and exploring nearby islands, woods and natural areas. He served as treasurer and board member of both the Blue Hill Public Library and Stonington Sea Products, organizations to which he felt deeply committed. In pursuit of his lifelong interest in ancient sites, he traveled to Peru, Easter Island, New Zealand and his beloved Scotland. Four years ago, he was diagnosed with semantic dementia, a rare progressive condition which was complicated by recent strokes and, for the past few months, has been well cared for at the Island Nursing Home. Besides his wife, he leaves his son, Ted Wright; his daughter, Lauren Wright Toal and her husband, Dan; four grandchildren, Catherine, Matthew, Ashley and Jack Toal; his sister, Marjorie Dwyer and her husband, David Kulp; his brother-in-law, Robert Poole and his wife, Janice, and two nieces. FUNERAL NOTICE: A memorial celebration of Steve's life will be held May 1, 2008 at 11 a.m. at the Wright's home, 108 Old Place Road, Sunshine, Deer Isle. Memorial contributions may be made in Steve's name to the Island Nursing Home, North Deer Isle Road, Deer Isle, ME, or to AFTD (The Association for Frontotemporal Dementia), 1616 Walnut St., Suite 1100, Philadelphia, PA 19103.
