1926-2009
BENNINGTON - Sterling A. "Zip" Wilson, 83, a resident of Main St Bennington, VT died unexpectedly Wednesday December 30, 2009 at his residence.
He was born in Bennington, Vt. Jan. 29, 1926. He was the son of the late Joseph A. Wilson Sr. and Hazel Armstrong Wilson. Sterling received his education in Bennington and was a 1943 graduate of Bennington High School. He later attended Dartmouth College.
Mr. Wilson was a World War II veteran serving in the United States Navy where he received The Victory Medal, American Theatre Medal and Asiatic-Pacific Medal.
On July 7, 1948 Sterling married the former Polly Ridlon in Newport Vermont.
In earlier years Sterling was employed as Plant Manager at the Sprague Electric Company in Bennington. When the company closed in Bennington he went to work at Sprague Electric in North Adams where he worked as a Time Study Engineer. He later was employed by David Kessler at Tri State Water as a well driller and was a well known Dowser. His last employment was with Folmsbee Busing where he drove the Special Education Bus.
Sterling was a very active member of Saint Peters Episcopal Church in Bennington where he served on many committees including Parish Administrator, Jr. and Sr. Warden was a Lay Reader and member of the Vestry. As a young boy he was a member of the choir. He was a life member of the Bennington Lodge of Elks # 567 and a 50 year member Mount Anthony Lodge # 13 F& AM. Sterling enjoyed watching and feeding birds. He loved the outdoors, watching football and was a Boston Red Sox fan. He also enjoyed reading. In the 1960 and 70's Sterling worked with Bucky Broomhall and the Mount Anthony Nordic Team.
Survivors include his wife, Polly Wilson of Bennington, a daughter, Linn Wilson of Newfane, Vt.; three nephews, two grand nephews, and a special grand niece. He was pre-deceased by a son, Dale Stephen Wilson and a brother, Joseph A. Wilson Jr.
FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from Saint Peters Episcopal Church on Sunday Jan. 3, 2010 at 2 p.m. where the Burial Office with Holy Eucharist will be offered by Rev. Dr. Anita Schell Lambert, Rector, officiating.
Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Park Lawn Cemetery.
