NEWBURYPORT, Mass. -- Stowell D. Baxter, 89, died on Aug. 5, 2007, in Newburyport, Mass., born July 14, 1918, to Clarence and Lillian Stowell Baxter in Framingham. He was educated at Trinity Pawling School, Harvard College.

He commissioned in U.S. Coast Guard Lt. J.G. and he served aboard attack transports in North Atlantic, Med., North African and Sicilian campaigns. Stowell founded 1945 Baxter Lumber Co., an import-export company dealing in timber and timber products, sold to interests in Holland and Belgium in 1979.

He lived in Old Bennington, Vt., and served as trustee to Old Village, Bennington Library, Bennington Museum and trustee and deacon of Old First Church. He married Priscilla Hopkins in Boston 1944, who died in 1993. She had been treasurer of B.L.C. for many years.

He is survived by daughter Diane of Rocks Village, Haverhill and two grandchildren.

He was a member of the Harvard Club of Boston, Harvard Club of New York, the Wantasket Trout Club of Weston, the Vermont and Society of Colonial Wars, Boston.

Burial will be in the family lot in Old First Church cemetery, Old Bennington, Vt.

Funeral arrangements are by the Twomey LeBlanc Funeral Home, 193 High St., Newburyport, Mass.
