Stuart Macnaughtan Hill 1925-2011 SUNDERLAND VT Stuart Macnaughtan Hill of Sunderland, Vermont died peacefully in his home on March 16th. Stuart was born February 20, 1925 at home in Sunderland, Vt. He was the fifth son of Jerome F. Hill and Elsie Harrington Hill. He grew up at the Hill Farm Inn. His early education was in Sunderland and he was a 1943 graduate of Burr and Burton Seminary. He married his classmate R. Patricia Trefry October 12, 1944 at the First Congregational Church in Manchester, Vt. He has been a member of the First Congregational Church since December 1944. Stuart was employed by Brown & Hitchcock Lumber Supply and Sheet Metal Shop. He became a sheet metal smith and continued his employment there when the business became R.H. Bibens Inc. He retired after 42 years in 1990. He was a member of the Sunderland School Board from 1954 to 1972. He was instrumental in helping transition the four, one-room school houses in Sunderland from each teaching grades first thru eighth to schools that only had two grades per school house. Consequently, bringing children of like ages from the town together. He worked on getting each school drilled wells, indoor plumbing, and furnaces for heat replacing old wood stoves. He then worked very hard on getting the current Sunderland School built in 1969. He participated in getting the first school bus in Sunderland. Stuart proudly gave blood to the Red Cross for many, many years. He was a member of the 12 gallon blood donor club. He enjoyed gardening, carpentry, helping his family with their homes, golf and traveling. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great- grandfather. He very proudly celebrated his 86th birthday on February 20th. He is survived by his daughter Sandra Hill Wilcox and her husband Howard A. Wilcox of Manchester, son-in-law Edmund M. Scheiber and his wife Jennifer of Lake George, N.Y. Five grandchildren, Kimberly Farrell of Durango, Colo., Craig H. Wilcox and Deborah Haynes of Sunderland, Dr. E. Morgan and Lisa Scheiber of Marshfield, Mass., Christina M. Wilcox of Manchester, Jonathan and Franziska Wilcox of Fort Collins, Colo. He had 11 great grandchildren that loved him dearly, Gavin, Austin, Owen and Cole Wilcox, Emily and Eric Owens, Kathryn and Ryan Farrell, Cole and Holly Scheiber, and Taylor Wilcox Stuart is pre-deceased by his loving wife R. Patricia Hill in 2007, his beloved daughter Judith Hill Scheiber in 1998 and five brothers, Julius, Earle, Howard, Kenneth and Donald. FUNERAL NOTICE: A celebration of his life will be held on Sunday March 20th at the First Congregational Church in Manchester at 2 p.m. A private committal service will be held at a later date.
