Susan U. Briggs 1925-2011 NORTH BENNINGTON Mrs. Susan U. Briggs, wife of John H. (Bud) Briggs, a lifelong resident of North Bennington, passed away on February 8th at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation surrounded by her family following a long illness. Sue was born in Shaftsbury on July 4, 1925 to the late Blanche (Barber) Underhill and Frederick Underhill. When Sue was very young, her mother passed away, and she was raised and adopted by her maternal grandparents Susan and Jacob Barber. At twelve years of age she went to live with her aunts, May Barber Bromley, Gladys Hustler and Ruth Carroll. She remained with her aunts until she wed her beloved husband, John (Bud) Briggs on February 14, 1947. She was a graduate of North Bennington High School class of 1943, and St. Joseph's Business College class of 1945. She worked in the EZ Mills as a bookkeeper, and the First National Bank in North Bennington. While raising her family she worked at Tansitor Electronics, was a cook at Molly Stark School, and for many years a cook at North Bennington Elementary School from where she retired. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star Tucker Lodge in North Bennington. She was a member of the North Bennington Baptist Church for all of her life. Sue loved her church, and was very active in it. She played the piano for the Sunday school for many years and later played for the church services. Sue was blessed with the gift of music, and enjoyed sharing it at her church as well as playing the piano for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Sue also enjoyed cooking, baking, knitting and crocheting. Sue's family was her greatest joy. She leaves her beloved husband John (Bud) Briggs of 64 years. Loving mother of Gary J. Briggs and his wife Debbie of Pownal, Vt., John W. Briggs and his wife Jill of Eagle Bridge, N.Y. and Linda Sue Briggs-Menz of Boca Raton, Florida. Sue had ten grandchildren, Kevin Briggs of St. Albans, Vt., Jennifer Briggs-Margoupis of Georgia, Peggy Briggs of Bedford, Mass., Stephanie Sue Briggs of Burlington, Vt., Tyson Briggs of Eagle Bridge, Chelsea and Jodi Briggs of Bennington, and Michael, Christopher and Michelle Menz of Boca Raton, Fla. Sue also had seven great grandchildren, Zachary, Aidan, Keegan, Kyleigh, Kiersten, Kaelyn and Marley. A brother Thomas Underhill of Danbury, Conn. She was pre-deceased by a grandson John Briggs-Courtney. FUNERAL NOTICE: A service to celebrate the life of Suisan U. Briggs will be held from the North Bennington Baptist Church on Saturday February 19, 2011 at 2 p.m. The burial will take place in the family lot in Grandview Cemetery in North Bennington at the convenience of the family.
