NEW ASHFORD, Mass. -- Susan Louise Phelps, 88, a longtime resident of Roys Road, died peacefully at her home on Sunday evening, Oct. 31, 2004, following a long illness.

She was born in Deptford, N.J. on March 31, 1916 and was the daughter of Morey and Ivy (Manchester) Smith. She received her education in New Jersey. She married Roger H. Phelps on May 31, 1941 in Woodbury, N.J. Shortly after their marriage, they relocated to New Ashford. Mr. Phelps predeceased her.

Her family was her greatest joy. Mrs. Phelps was an avid animal lover and gardener. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Williamstown. Mrs. Phelps is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Sandra Phelps of Hoosick, N.Y.; her daughter Susan L. Phelps of New Ashford; her granddaughter Heidi Byrne and her husband, Brian, of Amston, Conn.; her granddaughter Betsy Seplowitz and her husband, Eric, of Ballston Spa, N.Y.; and her granddaughter, Brenda Phelps of Hoosick, N.Y. Mrs. Phelps leaves two great-grandchildren, Kyra and Eliza Byrne. She is predeceased by three brothers.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday morning, Nov. 3, at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Williamstown, with the Rev. Peter Daniels officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot in Southlawn Cemetery in Williamstown.

Friends may call at the George M. Hopkins Funeral Home, 61-67 Spring St., Williamstown, on Tuesday, Oct. 2, from 4 to 7 p.m. Memorials in her honor may be made to the Second Chance Animal Shelter or the First Baptist Church through the George M.
