Suzanne W. Groves 1927-2012 DORSET Suzanne W. Groves, 85 a resident of Pinnacle Lane died peacefully Saturday June 9, 2012 at her home surrounded by her family and friends. Mrs. Groves was born in Schaffhausen, Switzerland in the spring of 1927. As a young girl growing up on the German border during World War II, she witnessed the tragedies of war including losing her close childhood friend to a stray bomb and her father serving with the Swiss army to defend it's borders. Following the war, she received her diploma in child nursing. Suzanne lived in France for two years then decided to come to America to work and learn the language. She arrived at Ellis Island in October of 1950. From there, she travelled to Wilmington, Delaware where she became a nanny for the famous DuPont family. She spoke very little English and became self -taught by listening to the radio and attending movies. In 1951 she met Arthur Groves who was working as a civil engineer. They married in September of 1952. He was the love of her life. After several moves, including living on the island of Crete in Greece for two years, Suzanne and Arthur settled in Manchester, where they raised their two daughters. In 1978 they moved into their home on Pinnacle Lane. Arthur passed on June 18, 1992. Mrs. Groves had been an active member of Zion Episcopal Church where she served with the Vestry, Altar Guild and Youth Group. When her daughters were young, she was a leader in the Brownies and Girl Scouts. She loved the out of doors, especially taking walks with her faithful companion, Coco. She was an avid skier, tennis player and golfer and was a longtime member of the Dorset Field Club. Suzanne was passionate about her family and her home life. She loved working in her gardens and was an excellent cook and baker. She had a wonderful, witty sense of humor, which she maintained throughout her illness. Suzanne was an elegant and fashionable woman. She used her flair for fashion while working for Pendleton, J. Peterman and Burberry. Suzanne worked part-time until she was 82 years old. She leaves her daughters and sons in law Suzette and Neal Penton of Holyoke, Co and Michele and Kraig Hannum of Dorset, sister Emily Muller of Switzerland, grandchildren Robby Eaton, Schuyler Hannum, Taylor Mignone and Brianna Mignone, former son in law Frank Mignone and many beloved nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by her twin sister Lineli Scherer in 2004. A Service of Remembering and celebration of her life will be held on Friday, August 3rd at 2 p.m. at Zion Episcopal Church in Manchester, with Reverend John S. Mitchell officiating. She will be privately laid to rest with Arthur in Bellevue Cemetery in Adams, Massachusetts.
