Sylvia Richards 1939-2009 MANCHESTER Sylvia E. Richards, 70, of 47 School Street, Manchester, was born on Feb. 28, 1939, and passed away on Oct. 31, 2009. Sylvia was the daughter of Ida Smith and Howard Johnston and was born and raised in Manchester. She is survived by her sons, Edward H. Hopkins of Manchester and, Robert C. Hopkins; a daughter-in-law, Gail Hopkins; and grandsons, Forest and Jared Hopkins of Dorset; sister, Wanda Webster; brother-in-law, Roger Webster; and nieces, Angela Webster of Arlington; Tammy Collins, her husband Kevin, and her two sons Zach and Joel Zoufaly of Manchester; and nephew John Webster and his wife, Michelle Moe, and their six children in Washington state. Sylvia began working at an early age at the Quality Restaurant in Manchester where she caught the eye of painter Norman Rockwell and eventually sat for him. She then spent many years working at the Harvest Inn. Later in life Sylvia lived in Lexington, Kentucky, where she worked as a nanny. She eventually returned to Manchester and worked at Equinox Terrace for 14 years. She was a very caring person who loved her work with the elderly. Sylvia loved children and was a Sunday school teacher in the 1970s at the First Baptist Church of Manchester. She loved all kinds of animals. She enjoyed pottery and painting and developed an interest in jewelry to the extent that she became very knowledgeable about gemstones. She loved to travel and enjoyed her adventures to Ireland, Hawaii, Nova Scotia, and other destinations with lifelong friend Kathy Powers. More recently she enjoyed riding around New England with Cristina Mansfield and Letty Beltran pointing out structures built by her father and grandfather, who were masons. Sylvia was an active long-time member of Adoniram Chapter #22 of the Order of the Eastern Star.
