VILLANOVA, Pa. -- The Rev. Terrance W. Hyland, OSA, 64, died Oct. 13, 2006, in Bryn Mawr, Pa., from complications of several serious illnesses. Father Hyland was born on May 23, 1942, in Hoosick Falls N.Y., the son of Thomas W. and Rita (Fordham) Hyland.

He graduated as salutatorian of his class from St. Mary’s Academy in Hoosick Falls, N.Y., in 1960. He graduated from SUNY Albany with a degree in Business Education in 1964 and taught at the high school level at Pine Plains High School for one year before entering the Augustinian order in 1965. He professed his first vows in 1966, went on to obtain two masters degrees and was ordained to the priesthood in August 1971.

His priestly assignments included serving as teacher and guidance counselor at Malvern Preparatory School, Malvern, Pa., directing seminary formation programs for the Augustinian order at Villanova, Pa., and serving as an assistant pastor at St. Augustine’s in Andover, Mass. From 1985 to 1993 he served as pastor of St. Augustine’s Parish in Troy, N.Y. He also served in campus ministry at Merrimack College, North Andover, Mass., and as director of the Living Waters Catholic Waters Catholic Reflection in Maggie Valley, N.C.

Because of health problems, he relocated to St. Thomas Monastery, Villanova Pa., in 2003, continuing to serve in various ministries including serving as assistant pastor at St. Rita’s National Shrine in Philadelphia as his health permitted.

Fr. Terry was known for his gentleness, compassion, sense of humor and approachability. Many sought his spiritual guidance and his insight.

Survivors include his twin brother, Thomas (Sheila) of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; his two sisters, Noreen (Robert) Haynes, of Hoosick Falls, N.Y., and Ann Marie (Philip) Bradley, of Albany, N.Y. He is also survived by two nephews, three nieces, five great-nephews and nieces, three aunts, one uncle and many cousins.

The rite of reception of the body will be celebrated at St. Augustine’s Church in Troy, N.Y., on Friday Oct. 20, 2006, from 2 to 2:30 p.m. The body will be present there for wake and prayer through the afternoon and evening.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 7 p.m.

Burial will be held in the Augustinian Lot at St. John’s Cemetery in Troy, N.Y., at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

The Augustinian community, of which Father Hyland was a member, request thats in lieu of flowers, contributions be made for the care of sick and elderly Augustinians C/O Augustinian Fund, The Provincial Office of Development, 214 Ashwood Rd., Villanova PA 19085-0340.
