McHENRY, Ill. -- Theodore- Lewis Van Buren, 80, of McHenry, passed away Saturday, Dec. 18, 2004, at his home.

He was born May 20, 1924 in Bennington, Vt., to James V. and Mary (Hollister) Van Buren Putnam. On Sept. 2, 1944, he married Therese C. Bellernare in Bennington.

Formerly of Vermont, Theodore resided in McHenry from 1968 until retiring in 1974 and moving to Port Saint Lucie, Fla. In 2003, he and his wife moved back to McHenry to be near their children.

A 20-year veteran of the U.S. Navy, Theodore enlisted during WWII. He went to flight school in Pensacola, Fla., and was then stationed in the South Pacific. He enlisted, serving in the Korean War, the Berlin airlift, the Cuban missile crisis, was stationed at French Morocco VR24 and then VR22 in Norfolk, Va. He also served as squadron commander at the Naval Air Station VR662 in Lakehurst, N.J., ultimately achieving the rank of commander.

In 1956, he joined Capital Airlines, which merged with United Airlines. Capt. Van Buren flew DC-6s, 737s and 727s, logging more than 27,000 hours before retiring in 1974. Hobbies he enjoyed were fishing and woodworking.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Therese; four children, Brian Van Buren of Crown Point, Ind., Karen Van Buren of McHenry, Bruce Van Buren of San Bruno, Calif. and Bonnie Tonettl of Pound, Wisc.; two grandchildren, Lori (Roman) DiVita and Diane Meeks; and three great-grandchildren, Ryan, Brandon and Ashton.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary, as a child, and his parents.

Interment will take place on Wednesday, Feb. 16, in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va. Arrangements entrusted to the George R. Justen & Son Funeral Home, 3519 W. Elm St., McHenry, IL 60050.
