Obituary Condolences

Thomas J. Kreffer 1933-2009 SANDGATE Thomas John Kreffer, 76, died peacefully on August 3, following a long and courageous battle with cancer. Tom was born in 1933 in Thornwood, New York, to Thomas John Kreffer Sr., and Theresa Schaeffer Kreffer. Following high school graduation, he proudly served in the Navy from 1951 - 1954. His interest in the oceans and all things related grew from the loss of his father who died at sea during World War II. Tom began his life-long vocation as an electrician while serving in the Navy, later becoming a master electrician. He met his loving, devoted wife of 54 years, Anne Olmstead Kreffer, while on leave from the Navy. They were married upon his discharge and resided in Connecticut for several years, where their three daughters were born. They moved their young family from Brookfield, Conn., to Sandgate, Vt., in 1965. Tom's greatest loves were his wife and family and their homestead along the Green River. He also enjoyed boating, camping, gardening, and woodworking. Tom leaves behind his wife, Anne, and their three daughters: Lori Anne Kreffer Carpenter of Chicopee, Mass.; Susan Delight Kreffer Corcoran and her husband, Thomas Patrick Corcoran, of Sandgate; and Tina Anne Kreffer Thorpe of Arlington. He also leaves behind five grandchildren: Benjamin James Corcoran, Lacy Anne Carpenter, Thomas John Carpenter, Lee Andrew Thorpe, and Katie Anne Thorpe; three great-grandchildren; a sister Jean Markay of Virginia; and four nieces. Tom was predeceased by his parents, a sister, Marie Kreffer Chovau, and two nephews. It was Tom's wish that his family hold a private celebration of his life. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to support the Dementia Fund at the Vermont Veteran's Home, 325 North Street, Bennington, VT 05201, Attention: Business Office.
