SHAFTSBURY -- Mr. Thomas O. Mailhot, 67, a resident of Mountain View Drive, died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004 at the Fletcher Allen Medical Center in Burlington, following a long illness.

He was born in Burlington, April 12, 1937. He was the son of the late Eustache and Helen (Fortune) Mailhot. He received his education in Burlington and was a 1956 graduate of Cathedral High School in Burlington. Tom was a United States Army veteran serving in Germany from 1956 to 1959. In 1961, he was recalled to duty serving during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

He married the former Margaret Remillard on June 10, 1961 in Burlington. Tom retired from the Vermont State Police Force after 30 years of service.

He was a member of the Bennington Elks Club, the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion Post 13 in Bennington.

He enjoyed music and flying and, as an arson investigator, he created a fire prevention and magic show that he performed throughout the state of Vermont. Tom will be best remembered for his great sense of humor and his story-telling.

Survivors include his wife Margaret Mailhot of Shaftsbury; his daughter Karen Busch and her husband William of Boston; three sons, Dennis Mailhot of Frederick, Md., Christopher Mailhot of Arlington, and Kenneth Mailhot of Frederick; a brother, Mark Mailhot of Milton; a sister, Jeannine, and her husband Elmer Bogue of Jericho; a godchild, Susan Bowles of South Burlington; several nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by a son, Michael Mailhot.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, Wednesday, Aug. 11 at 9:15 a.m. with a prayer, and then from St. John the Baptist Catholic Church at 10 a.m. where the liturgy of Christian death and burial will be offered.

The burial will take place in the family lot in Calvary Cemetery Burlington.

Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. The wake service will be held Tuesday at 7:30 p. m.
