Obituary Condolences

BENNINGTON -- A prayer service for Mr. Thomas O. Mailhot was held on Wednesday, Aug. 11, at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Christian death and burial at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in North Bennington. The mass was celebrated by the Rev. Edward Howard, pastor, the Rev. Michael Demasi, Deacon David O’Brien and Ivon Matte.

The hymns selected for the mass included “Prayer of Saint Francis,” “Here I am Lord,” “I am the Bread of Life,” “Amazing Grace,” and “Go Tell It on the Mountain.” Soloist was Monica Murray, who was accompanied by Mrs. Louise Gauthier on the organ. The casket pall was placed on the casket by Mr. Mailhot’s sons Dennis, Christopher and Ken Mailhot. A wooden cross was placed on the casket by Mr. Mailhot’s wife, Margaret, and his daughter Karen. The Old and New Testaments were read by Dennis and Ken Mailhot. The offertory gifts were brought to the altar by a sister-in-law, Janice Gonyaw, and her two daughters, Michelle and Jessica. A reception followed the Mass at the Saint John’s Parish Center.

The burial took place in the family lot in the New Mount Calvary Cemetery in Burlington, with the Rev. Daniel White, associate pastor of St. Mark’s Parish in Burlington, offering the prayers of committal.

Pall bearers for the services from the Vermont State Police Department were Sgt. Todd Protzman, Cpl. Kevin Scott and Troopers Tom Mossier, Andy McLaughlin, Brian Talmadge and Tyler Burgess. The officer-in-charge was Sgt. Michael Heston. Serving as a honor guard during the calling hours were Sgt. Sean Carroll, Sgt. Todd Protzman, Cpl. Kevin Scott and Trooper Tyler Burgess.

The vigil service took place on Tuesday evening, with the Rev. Howard and the Rev. Demasi officiating. Members of both the Arlington and Bennington fire departments paid their respects to the family.

Mr. Thomas O. Mailhot, 67, a resident of Mountain View Drive, Shaftsbury, died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2004, at the Fletcher Allen Hospital in Burlington. Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home in Bennington.
