Obituary Condolences

Thoreau Raymond 1914-2011 Thoreau Raymond, 96, who chaired the Social Studies Department at Mt. Anthony Union High School in its early years, died January 14, 2011 in Concord, N.H., where she had lived in retirement since 1992. There are no immediate survivors. Born June 14, 1914 in Bourne, Mass., she was the only child of Ward and Hannah Latchford Raymond, both teachers, of Worcester. She graduated from Taunton High School and in 1935 from Wheaton College. She received her Master's degree in American History in 1941 from Stanford University. During World War II she volunteered for service in the WAVES. For over 35 years she taught history, and sometimes English in secondary schools, public and private. Chief among them were the Emma Willard School in Troy (1952-1957), Columbia High School in South Orange, N.J. (1959-1966) and Mt Anthony (1967-1973), with briefer stints in Korea, Ghana, and elsewhere. Throughout her life she was a seeker, with wide ranging interests, and this questing nature marked her teach and mentoring. Developing concerns brought her to membership in Bennington Friends Meeting (Quakers). MEMORIAL NOTICE: A memorial meeting under the care of Bennington Friends Meeting will be held at a later date.
