Obituary Condolences

NORTH BENNINGTON -- Vera Mattison Hedding, age 100, a longtime resident of Pleasant Street, died Saturday evening, Dec. 13, 2003, at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center following a brief illness.

She was born in Shaftsbury on Dec. 25, 1902 and was the daughter of German D. and Hattie A. (Wade) Mattison. She began her education in the one-room schoolhouse in Sodom (Shaftsbury) and at the age of 9, moved to Pleasant Street and finished her education in North Bennington.

She lived in the same house the rest of her life. Mrs. Hedding attended Child Nurses Training as St. Margaret’s in Albany, N.Y., and briefly worked as a private-duty nurse. On July 4, 1946, she married Maynard Hedding at the Baptist Parsonage in Bennington. Mr. Hedding died in 1974. From 1933 until 1953, she worked as a housekeeper for the faculty at Bennington College, and continued to work there part-time well into her 70s.

She enjoyed bird watching, and in her earlier years, was an avid outdoors person, enjoying hiking, skiing and skating. Mrs. Hedding was deeply involved with the Womens’ Fellowship of the North Bennington Baptist Church.

Mrs. Hedding is survived by a stepson and his wife, Earl and Joyce Hedding of North Bennington; two stepdaughters, Elaine Dalton of Shaftsbury and Evelyn Stinis of Sheldon, Conn.; she has two nieces, Lisa Catapano of North Bennington, with whom she lived, and Patricia McDurfee of Reno, Nev.; two step-grandchildren, Wayne Hedding and Beverly Hedding. She is predeceased by one sister, Lillian Smith.

Graveside ceremonies will be held in the spring 2004 at Grandview Cemetery in North Bennington. There are no calling hours scheduled. Memorials in her honor may be made to the Kurn Hattin Home or the Second Chance Animal Shelter in care of the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, P.O. Box 957, Bennington VT 05201.
