Verna Jean Brooks

1935 - 2012 BENNINGTON, VT Verna Jean Brooks, age 77, a resident of Applegate Drive in Bennington, died on Friday morning, Sept. 21, 2012 at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington following a brief illness.

She was born in Manchester, VT on June 21, 1935, daughter of the late Vernon and Edna (Johnston) Perkins. Mrs. Brooks attended Manchester Elementary School and graduated from Burr and Burton Seminary and also attended Southern Vermont College in Bennington. She married Vernon H. O'Dell who predeceased her. She later married Anthony Brooks who survives.

Mrs. Brooks had worked as a sewing machine operator for about 45 years. She had been employed at Hoyt Manufacturing Co., Thompson Mills and CB Sport.

She was a hard worker, and was a kind, loving, patient person. Along with her daughter Tonia, she would foster cat and kittens for Second Chance Animal Shelter. She was an avid fundraiser for the Applegate Community. She was an Avon Representative also. She enjoyed sewing, playing bridge at BPI and BINGO. Mrs. Brooks has studied at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Bennington.

Survivors, besides her husband and daughter Tonia of Bennington, include her daughter and son-in-law Jacqueline and James Donnelly of Bennington, her son and daughter-in-law, Vernon and Norma O'Dell of Shaftsbury; two grandchildren, Sheena M. Yarnal and her husband Justin of Hoosick Falls, NY and her grandson Eric W. Zwinge of North Bennington. She leaves two great-grandsons, Isaiah Zwinge and Dylan J. Yarnal. Mrs. Brooks has one sister, Betty Hill of Manchester, VT, three nephews and several other loving family members and friends.

MEMORIAL NOTICE: A memorial service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 29, at 1 p.m. at the Applegate Apartments Community Room, Orchard Rd. in Bennington. Interment will take place privately by her family.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Second Chance animal shelter through the MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME, 628 Main St. Bennington, VT 05201
