1929-2008
SHAFTSBURY - Vernon H. O'Dell, 78, a resident of Meadow Lane, Shaftsbury, died Thursday April 10, 2008 at the Vermont Veterans Home following a long illness.
He was born in Bennington, Oct. 21, 1929, son of Merritt B. and Hazel Mae Fiske O'Dell. Vernon received his education in Shaftsbury.
Vernon served in the Army during the Korean War.
In earlier years Vernon worked with his father on several area farms. He had also worked in construction and logging and for several years had worked for the Town of Bennington.
He married the former Ruth Ann Wright, daughter of the late Walter and Delia Wright, on July 17, 1976. Mr. and Mrs. O'Dell were married by Rev. Angus McDonald at the Shaftsbury Methodist Church.
He was a life member of the American Legion Post 13 and the VFW Post 1332. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.
He leaves his wife, Ruth Ann O'Dell, of Shaftsbury; a son Vernon E. O'Dell of Shaftsbury; a daughter, Jacklyn Joyce, of Bennington; five brothers, Merritt O'Dell Jr., William O'Dell, Donald O'Dell, and Roland O'Dell of Bennington, and Leon O'Dell of Shaftsbury; two sisters, Marge Bevins of Rutland, and Mildred Malone of Medina, N.Y. A special niece, Ann Squires of Montvale, N.J.; two special nephews, Mike Snyder of Pittsfield, Mass. and Tim Snyder of Pownal, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by a sister, Louise Leazer.
FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the All Faiths Chapel at the Vermont Veterans Home on Tuesday April 15, 2008 at 11 a.m.
Friends and family may call at the All Faiths Chapel from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
The burial with military honors will take place in the family lot in Center Shaftsbury Cemetery in Shaftsbury, Vt.
