Obituary Condolences

OCALA, Fla. -- Vernon Squiers of Ocala, formerly of Dorset, Vt., passed away on March 11, 2007, at Munroe Regional Medical Center.

Vernon is survived by his wife of 51 years, Leona Hewes Squiers, of Ocala, and his son and daughter-in-law, Glenn and Janet, and three grandchildren of Dayton, Ohio. He also leaves behind many nieces and nephews. Vernon found great joy in his family, the outdoors and flying with his son in light aircraft. As a young man, he served his country for eight years in the military as a Navy corpsman and Air Force Health Technician. He was particularly proud of his service with the 5th Marines in Camp Pendleton, Oceanside, Calif. Vernon served as town manager of Dorset, Vt., for 23 years and worked as a barber for over 50 years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, past patron of the Order of the Eastern Star in Manchester, Vt., and a member of the American Legion in Cambridge, N.Y.

Vernon placed tremendous value on the education of his grandchildren and his son’s profession as an educator. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial contributions made to the Miami Valley School Grandparent Fund, in care of MVS Advancement Office, 5151 Denise Drive, Dayton, OH 45429. Vernon was proud to have been part of the MVS community for the past 15 years.

A celebration of Vernon’s life will take place in Vermont at a later date.
