Vernon "Bud" Taft Sr. 1927 - 2009 BENNINGTON Vernon "Bud" Taft Sr., 81, 75 Bell St., died peacefully at his home on Thursday, Jan. 29, 2009 after a long illness. Born in Carthage, N.Y., on March 25, 1927, the son of Vernon and Elsie Gates Taft, he graduated from Carthage High School. Following graduation he moved to North Tarrytown, N.Y., where he worked for Cartoons Furniture Store until he joined the Air Force in 1944, which included a tour of duty in Europe. After his discharge, he began a career with Anchor Motor Freight, retiring after 26 years due to illness. He had met his lovely wife Eleanor Bingell in Tarrytown, and after a courtship of six months, they married on Sept. 30,1950. They made their home in Ossining, where they raised three children and a multitude of pets. They had an active social life in Tarrytown and Ossining, surrounded by family and friends. He was a member of the Ossining American Legion and Moose Club. A quiet, gentle man, he had hobbies of fishing, bowling, gardening, bird watching and completing crossword puzzles with his sons. He enjoyed the quiet of nature, sitting in his yard, and animals. He leaves his wife, Eleanor Jean Taft. He was blessed with two sons, Vernon Taft of Bennington and Bruce Taft of Brattleboro, and a daughter, Sharon Hoskins of Burlington. He was also blessed with three grandchildren, Kevin Hoskins of Boston, Sean Hoskins of Portland, Maine, and Kristen Hoskins of Seattle, Wash.
