Obituary Condolences

RAWSONVILLE -- Victor H. Szymanski, 64, of Rawsonville and Terryville, Conn. passed away Monday, July 21, 2003 at his home in Rawsonville.

Mr. Szymanski was born Aug. 7, 1938 in Hartford, Conn. He was a graduate of Terryville High School and University of Miami, Fla. In 1961 he started teaching fifth grade at the East Main Street School in Terryville. In 1968 he taught seventh and eighth grade at Harry S. Fisher School. In 1969 he was appointed Assistant Principal and retired in 1989.

He was an avid skier and joined the Stratton Mtn. Ski Patrol and National Ski Patrol as a volunteer in 1964. In 1978 he became a paid member of the ski patrol. He was a large part of organizing first aid coverage for events such as Volvo Tennis and LPGA at Stratton Mtn. In 1989 he was promoted to ski patrol supervisor, handling many behind the scenes administration tasks. He also played a major role in the development of Stratton’s first courtesy patrol, which still exists today.

Thanks to Victor’s enthusiasm and generosity the very first building fund donation for the Carlos Otis Stratton Mtn. Clinic was presented to Dr. Carlos Otis in 1971 by the Rawsonville Rammers Athletic Club. The clinic has just completed it 32nd year of operation. Even through this past winter Victor gave his time to coordinate many aspects of ski patrol and clinic interactions, including Stratton Mtn. Rescue operations.

He leaves two nieces, an aunt and several cousins.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Aug. 16, 2003, 1 p.m. at the Scott Funeral Home, 169 Main St., Terryville, Conn. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Terryville. There are no calling hours prior to this service.

A second memorial service will be held at Stratton Mtn. Resort on Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003, 1:30 p.m. in the Main Base Lodge.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Plymouth Volunteer Ambulance Corps, 7 North Main St., Terryville, CT 06786 or to the Terryville Fire Dept., 21 Harwinton Ave., Terryville, CT 06786.
