NORTH ADAMS, Mass. -- Vincent Jerry “Soapy” Zappone, 72. of Reservoir Road, North Adams, died Sunday night, March 13, 2005, at the North Adams Regional Hospital after being stricken earlier in the evening at his home.

He was born in North Adams on Aug. 28, 1932, a son of the late James Vincent Zappone and Antoinette (Macchia) Zappone. He was educated in North Adams schools. He joined the former Sprague Electric Company in North Adams as a mason and millwright in June 1950 and with the outbreak of the Korean war, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy on Nov. 20, 1950. He served as a machinist mate third class on the USS Epperson in the Pacific theater of operation. He was awarded the China Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal with three stars, the United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Medal for his service.

Following his honorable discharge on Aug. 31, 1954, he returned to North Adams and the Sprague Electric Company until his retirement in 1992 with more than 42 years of service with the company.

Mr. Zappone was a lifelong communicant of St. Anthony of Padua Church of North Adams and a member of the Sprague Quarter Century Club, the Sprague Retirees Club, the North Adams Lodge No. 704 Sons of Italy, the Dr. George Curran Post No. 996 Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Frank Stiles Post No. 125 American Legion of North Adams.

He was a devoted loving husband, father and grandfather for his family and took pride in the fact that he built his own home on Reservoir Road. He enjoyed fishing, gardening and maintaining his home.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, the former Arlene Amelia Raina, whom he married on June 30, 1956 in St Anthony of Padua Church, North Adams; three daughters, Mary Anne Schnare of Singer Island, Fla., Diane Flight and her husband David Flight of North Bennington, Vt. and Brenda Zappone of North Adams; four grandchildren, Matthew Zappone of North Adams, Alex Schner and Andrea Schner of Singer Island and David Raina Flight of North Bennington; four sisters, Mary Girgenti and Elizabeth “Betty” Gagne of North Adams, Carmen Woodside of Pontiac, Mich. and Theresa Dabrowski of Adams; one brother, Anthony Zappone of North Adams; and nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins.

A brother, Jerry Zappone, died Dec. 16, 1945.

Funeral services for Vincent J. Zappone will take place Thursday, March 17, 2005, at 9:45 a.m. at the Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals - West Chapel, 521 West Main St., North Adams, followed by a liturgy of Christian burial at 10:30 a.m. at St Anthony of Padua Church, 64 Marshall St., North Adams with the Rev. Daniel J. O’Hear, pastor, officiating.

Burial will follow in Southview Cemetery, North Adams.

Calling hours at the funeral home are Wednesday, March 16, from 4 to 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, any donations in his memory are suggested for the St. Anthony Capital Campaign Fund or the American Diabetes Association through the funeral home.
