Viola Durant Plante 1922 - 2009 BENNINGTON Viola Durant Plante, 86, widow of Henry J. Plante, a former resident of Coulter Street, Bennington, died Friday, March 27, 2009 at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center following a brief illness. Born in West Pawlet, May 2, 1922, daughter of Henry and Mary Louise Courtois Durant. She received her early education at Sacred Heart School and was a 1941 graduate of Bennington High School. Mr. & Mrs. Plante were married Dec. 19, 1941, at Sacred Heart Church in Bennington. Mr. Plante died November 15, 2002. In earlier years Mrs. Plante was employed at Bennington Brush Company and Eagle Square in Shaftsbury. For many years Mrs. Plante was active with her husband in the operation of Plante Jewelers on Main Street in Bennington. When her children were young she was very active in school functions, Girl Scouts and local baseball programs. Together with her husband she was very active in Square Dancing and belonged to the Catamount Gadabouts, the Do-Si-Do-8's and the Country Squares of Cambridge. She also enjoyed round dancing, ballroom dancing, knitting and was a former member of the Bennington Club. She leaves three daughters and sons-in-law, the Rev. Diana and Carl Benjamin of Chelsea, Christine and Francis Greene Jr. of Bennington, and Marlene and Craig Bottesi of Petersburgh, N.Y.; a son and daughter-in-law, Alan and Vera Plante of North Bennington; 12 grandchildren, Cindy Ann, Alan and Nathan Jeandell, Leslie Benjamin, Michael, Matthew and Corinne Plante, Amy Andrews, Joshue Greene, Lynn Darrell and Ryan and Logan Bottesi; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Anita Taylor of Bennington; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Mrs. Plante was predeceased by three sisters and two brothers, Alice Shays, Madeline Hartnagle, Jeanette Estes, Timothy and Omer Durant. FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the MAHAR & SON FUNERAL HOME Tuesday, March 31, 2009 at 9:15 a.m. with a prayer and from St. John the Baptist Church in North Bennington at 10 a.m. where the Mass of Resurrection will be offered. Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Monday from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. Private committal services will take place at the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Should friends desire contributions in Viola Plante's memory may be made to either Sacred Heart School or the Vermont Heart Association through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
