BENNINGTON -- Mrs. Viola W. Knapp, 90, widow of Arnold Knapp, a resident of School Street, died peacefully, surrounded by her family, Tuesday, July 29, 2003 at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center following a brief illness.

Born in Charlemont, Mass., April 23, 1913 she was the daughter of the late Marcus G. and Ethel Mae (Flanders) Worden. She received her education in Hinsdale, N.H.

Mr. and Mrs. Knapp were married Oct. 9, 1937. Mr. Knapp died April 9, 1970.

In earlier years Mrs. Knapp was employed at the EZ Mills and later at Hoy Manufacturing until the time of her retirement.

Mrs. Knapp was a member of the Bennington Senior Citizens’ Group and a member of the Pownal Methodist Church.

She enjoyed sewing and playing cards. Her home and family were her main interests.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Kenneth G. Cone of Bennington; three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert L. and April Knapp of Pownal, Duane M. and Linda James Knapp of Norton, Mass. and Richard K. and Linda M. Knapp of Bennington; eight grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister and brother, Doris Hallock and Homer C. Worden both of Hinsdale, N.H.; nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and cousins. Mrs. Knapp was pre deceased by a brother, Richard Worden.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, Friday, Aug. 1 at 11 a.m. with Rev. Gaylord Campbell, pastor of the Pownal United Methodist Church officiating.

Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

All members of the Putnam Hose Fire Co. are requested to meet at the funeral home thursday at 6:45 p.m.

Burial will take place in the family lot in Pine Grove Cemetery in Hinsdale, N.H. on Saturday, Aug. 2 at 10 a.m.

Contributions in memory of Mrs. Knapp may be made to either the Bennington Rescue Squad or the Bennington Senior Citizens Group through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.

All members of the Pownal Valley Fire Department East Company and Ladies Auxiliary are requested to meet at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home at 7:15 p.m. at 628 Main St. Thursday.
