ARLINGTON -- Virginia King Rudd, 73, a resident of Santa Clarita, Calif. and formerly of Arlington, died on Aug. 12, 2004 in Santa Clarita.

Mrs. Rudd was born on May 6, 1931 in Dorset, the daughter of Kenneth and Alice (Tifft) King. She graduated from Bennington High School in the class of 1946 and, while attending school, played field hockey and other high school sports. Mrs. Rudd was a former member of the Federated Church of East Arlington and, in later years, a member of the First Baptist Church of Sunland, Calif. where her husband, Nelson, served as a deacon. During her years in Arlington, she was an active member of the community, including memberships in the Order of the Eastern Star and other civic organizations. She played an integral part in starting the first kindergarten class in Arlington. In California she became involved in junior bowling programs, serving as a coach and league coordinator.

Virginia’s spare time was spent bowling, camping, playing cards and traveling, especially her bi-yearly cross-country RV trips back home to Vermont. She shared a love for baking with her brother James, known for his very successful King Bakeries chain. In her later years, Virginia grew passionate for genealogical research and was especially proud of her Vermont heritage. Nothing pleased her more that watching her sons’, and later, her grandchildren’s success in whatever musical or sporting event they participated in.

Mrs. Rudd is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Nelson Edward and Christine (Montes) Rudd of Reno, Nev., Kim Corby and Lydia (Saxton) Rudd of Stevenson Ranch, Calif. and Scott David and Pamela (Quigle) Rudd of Saugus, Calif. She was especially proud of her five grandchildren, Nelson Edward III, Rebecca Lee, Allison Ann, Stephany Michelle and Sarah Gabriella Rudd. Mrs. Rudd was preceded in death by her brother, James King, her son, Kevin James, and her husband of 51 years, Nelson Edward Rudd.

A service to celebrate Mrs. Rudd’s life will be held on Friday, Sept. 10, at 11 a.m. at the Federated Church of East Arlington. The Rev. Thomas Truscott, interim pastor will officiate. Interment will immediately follow the service at Evergreen Cemetery in Arlington, where Mrs. Rudd will be laid to rest next to her loving husband and son. There are no calling hours scheduled.
