WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. -- Virginia Wilkinson Scribner, 88, a resident of Sweetwood Continuing Care Community, died Friday, Aug. 19, 2005, at home.

Born Aug. 6, 1917 in Cleveland, Ohio, she was the daughter of the late Ezra Gilford Wilkinson and Ruth Bergetta (Syverson) Wilkinson. She received a bachelor of fine arts degree in drama in 1938 from Ohio Wesleyan University, the first person in her family to earn a college degree. In 1940, she married Edward E. Scribner Jr. They were married for nearly 60 years until his death in January of 2000.

While raising a family, she also pursued a career as an elementary school teacher in Hudson, Ohio, where she lived for 30 years. She was active in the Hudson Players and the Hudson Garden Club. In the mid-1970s, she co-founded with her husband Scribner Realty.

In 1982, she and her husband retired from real estate, and moved to Shaftsbury, Vt. She worked as a volunteer at the Park-McCullough House in North Bennington, Vt. She also studied ornithology at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., and became an official tracker of migratory patterns of birds in Vermont. She moved to Williamstown in 1999.

She is survived by a son, David E. Scribner of Pittsfield, Mass.; a daughter, Sally Williamson McCreary of Opelika, Ala.; four grandchildren, Isaac Julian Scribner, James Uertz, Kristen Bowden and Allison Nealy; and three great-grandchildren.

She is predeceased by a grandson, Jonathan David Scribner.

A memorial service will be held Oct. 2 at Sweetwood at a time to be announced. Memorial contributions in Virginia Wilkinson Scribner’s memory may be made to a humane society of one’s choice through the office of the George M. Hopkins Funeral Home, 61-67 Spring St., Williamstown, MA 01267.
