Volkert "George" Peters

1937 - 2015 BENNINGTON Volkert J. "George" Peters, 78, died Wednesday December 30, 2015 at his residence following a long illness. He was born in Amrum, Germany, October 16, 1937. He was the son of the late Phillip Martin and Martha (Sager) Peters. George received his grammar school and trade school education in Germany and later emmigrated to the United States where he live in Ridgefield, CT and attended Danbury Teachers College. He married the former Helen Riechle who died on March 5, 1999. He later married Ann S. LeBlanc on August 27, 2000 in Bennington. For 50 years, George was a member of the Carpenters and Joiners of America Local 11 and for 23 years was employed by Yonkers Contracting where he was involved in many building projects. Some of the projects included high rises, schools, synagogues, churches, hospitals, restoration of bridges including 10 bridges at Kennedy Airport, the Water Refinery on Staten Island and many houses throughout Connecticut and New York. In 2000 George retired from Yonkers Contracting and moved to Vermont. George was a social member of both the American Legion Post #13 and the VFW Post 1332 in Bennington and an active member of the Bennington Lodge of Elks # 567 where he was voted "Elk of the Year in 2006". Over the years George has cooked and worked at many of the banquets and weddings held at the Elks and the American Legion. He served as a trustee and honoree trustee of the Elks until the time of his death. For 50 years George was a volunteer fireman with the Mahopac Fire Department and for two terms served as president of the fire company and president of the Emergency Radio Communications Unit. He was a member of the New York State Police Alumni. Survivors include his wife, Ann S. LeBlanc-Peters of Bennington, a son, Stanley Peters of Lake Luzerne, NY, a daughter, Gina Kipp and her husband, Tobias of Hadley, NY. Three step children, Sandra O'Neill and her husband, Keith of Bennington, Normand LeBlanc and his wife, Christa of Bennington and Michelle LeBlanc of Burlington, VT. He leaves one brother, Uwe Peters of Amrum, Germany. He has five grandchildren; Joshua and Rachel Kipp, Gavin and Jarred Peters and Adam Wolfe. Five step grandchildren, Abbie, Bailey and Ryan O'Neill and Whitney and Courtney LeBlanc; His very special friends, Darlene and Tim Cumm of North Bennington and Veronica Kuck of Mahopac, NY. He was predeceased by a son, Garrett Peters, a sister, Margaret Detlefsen and a brother, George Peters. SERVICES: A memorial service to celebrate the life of George will be held at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home in Bennington on Saturday January 9 at 1p.m. Friends may call at the Mahar and Son Funeral Home on Saturday from 11a.m. until the time of the service. The burial will take place in the family lot at Park Lawn Cemetery.
