W. Philip Giddings 1913 - 2009 JERICHO, VT W. Philip Giddings, M.D., passed away on Friday, Oct. 23, 2009. He was the husband of Elizabeth (Betty) Fisk Giddings, his wife of 68 years. Born Jan. 27, 1913, in Boston, Mass., son of Dr. Harold G. and Mildred P. Giddings, he graduated from Amherst College (Alpha Delta Phi) in 1934, where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa, and from Harvard Medical School in 1938. He completed an internship and general surgery residency at the Massachusetts General Hospital. On May 24, 1941, he married Grace Elizabeth Fisk. He enlisted in the Army and served as a captain in the Army Medical Corps in the Mediterranean Theater. He was severely wounded at Anzio. Ultimately, he returned to duty and was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. At the conclusion of the war, he remained in Italy for several months, helping to write a multi-volume set of books detailing what had been learned about the treatment of war wounds. This set remained the definitive work on the subject for many years. Upon discharge from the Army, he began his medical practice in Boston, moving to Bennington in 1950, where he set up his surgical practice and served as chief of staff at the Putnam Memorial Hospital (now the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center) until 1975. He was a Director of First VT Bank (now TD Bank). He also served as a trustee for the Bennington Museum. Dr. Giddings' life was filled with family, friends, travel, stamp collecting, word games, classical music, and sailing. He was especially fond of tennis, which he played well into his 80s. He was a lover of nature and was an avid bird watcher. His last 15 years were spent happily at Wake Robin Life Care Retirement Community in Shelburne. In addition to his wife, Dr. Giddings leaves four children, Robert F. Giddings, DVM, and his wife, Anne, of Cheshire Conn., Deborah G. Lawrence and her husband, Frederick, of Jericho, David G. Giddings and his wife, Cherie, of Readsboro, and James P. Giddings and his wife, Petria Mitchell, of West Brattleboro. He also leaves his grandchildren, Charlotte G. Gillespie and her husband, Boyd, of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., Robert P. Giddings and his wife, Lisa, of Mansfield, Conn., Gibson C. Lawrence and his wife, Carol Long, of Los Angeles, Calif., Abigail L. Belanger and her husband, Craig, of Portland, Maine, Cloelle Giddings of Ithaca, N.Y.; and great-grandchildren, Lilly, Helen, and Philip Gillespie, and Grace and Mary Belanger. He was predeceased by his brother Robert. MEMORIAL NOTICE: The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Wake Robin for their exceptional care during Dr. Giddings' final illness. There will be a Circle of Remembrance at Wake Robin on Friday, Nov. 6, 2009. Cremation arrangements will be handled by Stephen C. Gregory Cremation Services of Shelburne.
