Wally was born on August 16, 1925 in Trossingen, Germany and came to the United States as a young child and was raised in Newark and New Brunswick, NJ with his older sister, Hildegarde. In his early years, Wally actively participated in the Boy Scouts and became an Eagle Scout which showcased his many talents such as translating Morse code. Wally was a decorated World War II veteran and served in the U.S. Army with five (5) battle stars. Wally was drafted in December 1943 and deployed in the Pacific Theatre in early 1944. He was enlisted in the Army's Company C, 108th Infantry Regiment, 40th Infantry Division and served in Operation New Britain in Papua, New Guinea and the Liberation of the Philippines Islands. As in Wally's own words, "My father saw me on the day I shipped out to the Pacific and he told me Wally this country has been very good to our family. You should be a good soldier for it." He was very proud to have served in the U.S. military. After his military service with an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army, Wally attended Syracuse University and received an undergraduate business degree from Syracuse University. At Syracuse, Wally was a member of the Syracuse Swim and Track and Field Teams. Wally's professional life from the mid 1960's to his retirement was as an International Marketing Manager at Sprague Electric in North Adams, MA. His career choice afforded him the opportunity to travel the continents of the world and he developed fluency in several languages beyond speaking German.
