Walter F. Babcock

1942-2009 NORTH BENNINGTON Walter F. Babcock, 67, husband of Joanne Pierce Babcock, a resident of Grant Street, North Bennington, died Monday, Nov. 9, 2009, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center following a long illness.

Born in North Adams, Nov. 25, 1942, he was the son of the late Fred and Lois Amadon Babcock.

Walt received his education in the Pownal and Bennington schools and was a 1960 graduate of Bennington High School.

Walt served in the Vermont National Guard for six years.

Walt and Joanne were married in Bennington on Apr. 27, 1963.

He had been employed at the Bijur company in Bennington for 40 years until his retirement in 2002. Walt was also employed for 22 years at the former Green Mountain Race Track in Pownal.

In earlier years, Walt was a member of the Eagle Hose Company, Bennington Fire Department. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, wildlife conservation, camping and playing horseshoes. Walt also enjoyed making maple syrup with his friend, Keith Armstrong.

Survivors include his wife, Joanne Babcock, of North Bennington; a daughter and son-in-law, Kelly and Keith Cross, of Pownal; a son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Mary Babcock, of Shaftsbury; and a son and his fiancé, Trevor Babcock and Nikki Sausville, of Shaftsbury; eight grandchildren, Amy, Keith Jr., Eric, Chelsea, Kodi, Mitchell, Ayden and AshleighKate; two great-grandsons, Austin and Ryan; a brother, Larry Babcock of Casper, Wyo.; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

FUNERAL NOTICE: The funeral will be held from the MAHAR & SON FUNERAL HOME Friday, Nov. 13, 2009 at 10 a.m. with Rev. Jerrod Hugenot, Pastor of the First Baptist Church officiating.

Friends may call at the funeral home Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m.

Burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.

Should friends desire, memorial contributions may be made to either the Vermont Department of Fish & Wildlife Conservation Camp Endowment Fund or the Alzheimer's Foundation through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
