Obituary Condolences

BENNINGTON -- Walter F. Burdick, 69, a resident of Chapel Road, died on Thursday afternoon, Feb. 15, 2007, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center.

Mr. Burdick was born in Cambridge, N.Y., on June 23,1937, the son of the late Ernest and Katherine (Callahan) Burdick Sr. He grew up in Pownal, where he attended the Oak Hill School.

Mr. Burdick married the former Anna Jennings in Pownal on May 25,1957. They began raising their family in Pownal prior to moving to Bennington several years ago.

Mr. Burdick was currently working at the Equinox Hotel in Manchester Village. He had previously worked at the former Pownal Tanning Co., the Bennington Banner and the former General Cable Co. in Pownal for 30 years.

An avid outdoorsman, he loved hunting and fishing and taught many family members the sport of hunting. A devoted family man, he loved the company of his grandchildren and was known by many as “Big Walt.” In the past he enjoyed working on cars. He was a NASCAR fan and followed Jeff Gordon’s career for many years. He was looking forward to watching the Daytona 500 and following his driver.

Mr. Burdick leaves his wife of 50 years, Anna M. Burdick of Bennington; three sons, Walter W. Burdick and his wife Debbie of Pownal, George E. Burdick and his wife Vickie of Canastota, N.Y., and Michael J. Burdick and his wife Annie Marie of Manchester; a daughter, Robin L. Packard and her husband Michael of Florida, Mass.; four brothers, Ernest Burdick Jr., Donald Burdick, Harvey Burdick and Frank Burdick, all of Pownal; a sister, Lillian Wilson of Pownal; 11 grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by brothers Robert and Henry Burdick and granddaughter Lisa Marie Burdick.

Funeral services will be held Monday, Feb. 19, at 11 a.m. at the Hanson-Walbridge Funeral Home, 213 West Main St., with the Rev. Deborah Estey, pastor of the First United Methodist Church, officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
