Walter J. Hyjek 1928-2012 SHAFTSBURY Walter J. Hyjek, 83, a resident of Main Street, Shaftsbury, died Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at Arizona Heart Hospital in Phoenix following a long illness. Born in West Rutland July 21, 1928, he was the son of the late Adam and Mary (Worosila) Hyjek. He received his education in the St. Stanislaus Kostka Elementary School and was a 1946 graduate of West Rutland High School. He served in the United States Air Force from 1946 until 1949. Walt later attended Albany Business College and was a graduate of the former St. Joseph's Business College in Bennington. Walt married the former Elinor Mercier at St. Paul's Church in Manchester on September 6, 1952. He was employed at the former BenMont Paper Company in Bennington for seventeen years before moving to the Stanley Tools Company in Shaftsbury where he worked as a cost analyst for eighteen years until the time of his retirement in 1990. He also worked at the former Green Mountain Race Track for nineteen years Walt served as an auditor for the Town of Shaftsbury for 15 years. He was a member of American Legion Post 13 and had formally served as a committee man for the Cub Scouts. Walt was also an active member of the Patriot's Booster Club at Mt. Anthony Union High School. He was a bowling coach in the Junior Bowling program at the Bennington Bowling Lanes for a period of 12 years. He enjoyed his grandchildren, playing cards, gardening, traveling, golf and spending winters in Arizona. Survivors include his wife, Elinor Hyjek of Shaftsbury, two daughters, Alicia M. Hyjek of Peoria, AZ and Lea J. Hyjek - Schwartz and her husband Lavon of Bremerton, Washington; three sons, Steven M. Hyjek and his wife Diana of Fairfax Station, Va., Major Jon M. Hyjek of Arlington, Va. and William P. Hyjek and his wife Susan of Burke, Va.; nine grandchildren, a sister, Rose McLaughlin of Proctor; a brother, Jacob Hyjek of Rutland and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Walt was predeceased by a sister, Frances Moody, and two brothers, Joseph and Peter Hyjek. A prayer service will be held from the MAHAR & SON FUNERAL HOME on Saturday, May 19, at 10 a.m. with a prayer and from Sacred Heart St. Francis de Sales Church at 10:30 a.m. where the Liturgy of Christian Death and Burial will be offered. Friends may call at the funeral home Friday, May 18, from 5 to 8 p.m. when the family will be in attendance. Burial will take place in the family lot in St. Johns Cemetery, North Bennington. Should friends desire memorial contributions in Walter J. Hyjek's memory may be made to the Walter and Elinor Hyjek Scholarship Fund at Sacred Heart School through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main Street, Bennington, VT 05201.
