Walter M. Rice

ARLINGTON -- Walter M. Rice, 83, of Center Lane in Arlington and formerly of Deland, Fla., died Thursday morning, May 26, 2005, at the Southwest Vermont Medical Center in Bennington. He was born in North Bennington on Jan. 23, 1922, the son of John Preston and Pearl Anne (Sweet) Rice, and attended local schools. He was employed by the former Hale Company as superintendent in furniture manufacturing. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II, achieving the rank of captain and infantry unit commander.

He is survived by his wife, the former Ruth A. White, whom he married in Manchester on Feb. 23, 1941 and celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary in February; three sons, Edward Rice, U.S. Air Force, retired, of Deland, Walter Rice of Vergennes, and William C. Rice of North Bennington; three daughters, Beverly O’Dell of Pownal, Sandra Zimmer of Arlington and Joanne Clayton of Arlington; two brothers, William Rice of North Petersburg, N.Y., and Clarence Rice of Manchester; 22 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Cheryl Charpentier of Deland; two brothers, Lincoln and Milford Rice; and his sister, Mable Rhodes.

Funeral services for Mr. Rice will be held Sunday afternoon, May 29, at 3 p.m. at Hanson-Walbridge, Arlington Chapel, Route 7A, Arlington. The Rev. Thomas Truscott of the Federated Church in East Arlington will conduct the service. Interment will be in the Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, N.Y. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 29, 2005, at the funeral home. Louis E. Auernig

HOOSICK FALLS, N.Y. -- Louis E. Auernig, 76, died Wednesday, May 25, 2005, at his residence on School Street in Hoosick Falls. Funeral services will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Mahar Funeral Home, 43 Main St. in Hoosick Falls.



Harrington services

BENNINGTON -- Funeral services for Marguerite S. Harrington were held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Thursday, May 26, 2005, with the Rev. Norma Drosky, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating.

Hymns offered during the service included “Amazing Grace,” “Be Not Afraid,” “Let There Be Peace on Earth” and the song “Mack the Knife.” Remembrances of Mrs. Harrington were offered by friends Donna MacLeod, Rose DiMarco, Debbie Getrost and Paula Mullen.

Among the many persons in attendance at the services were several former employees of the Bennington Banner where Mrs. Harrington was employed as office manager for 25 years.

Burial took place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery with the Rev. Drosky offering the committal prayers.

A reception at the Bennington Station Restaurant followed the funeral service.

Mrs. Harrington, wife of Reuben A. Harrington, a resident of East Main Street, died May 22, 2005, at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington.

Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home.
