BERLIN, N.Y. -- Walter Oscar Crandall, 69, of Plank Road died on Thursday at Westchester Medical Center from burns he received in an accident at his home in July.

Born in Berlin, N.Y., on May 24, 1937, he was the son of the late William and Pearl Goodell Crandall. A lifelong resident of Berlin, he attended the Grafton Baptist Church.

Educated in Berlin schools, Mr. Crandall was a self-employed “jack-of-all-trades.” He worked in the kitchen of the Troy Country Club and at W.J. Cowee, Inc. in Berlin before retiring due to illness. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, his family, friends and children along with taking long rides in the car. He also loved horses and had a special friend ,”Echo”.

Survivors include his companion of 18, years Emily L. Rowe, his children Walter “Allan” Yerton of Berlin, Janice L. Crandall, Carl Rowe and Lois Salvi all of Bennington, Vt., his siblings Charlotte Yerton of Berlin, Dorothy Ackner of Poestenkill, Wanda Stanley of Bennington., Josephine Bentley of Berlin, his aunt Carolyn Harrington of White Creek and his grandchildren Shawn Crandall, Zack and Chelsea Salvi. He was predeceased by a son Jim and siblings Otis, Arthur, William, Harold, Sarah, Hanna, Evelina, Anna and Ella Mae Ruttlier.

Funeral services will be held on Monday at 2 p.m. in the Thomas M. Barber Funeral Home, 66 Armsby Road, Petersburgh with the Rev. William O’Dell officiating. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Valley/Meadowlawn Cemetery. Relatives and friends are invited to visit at the funeral home on Monday starting at noon.
