WILMINGTON -- Walter R. Schneider, 79, a resident of Shafter Street, died Saturday, June 21, 2003 at the Southwestern Vermont Medical Center in Bennington.

Mr. Schneider was born in Schramberg, Germany on Feb. 19, 1924, he was the son of Robert and Maria (Hau) Schneider and received his education in Germany. During World War II he served in the German Army with the mountain troops. He came to the United States in 1957 where he used his education and training in tool and die making and design at the Bolova/Longins Watch Company in Queens, N.Y.

He found that the Wilmington area was an ideal setting to raise his children and enjoy his lifelong passion for skiing and relocated to the area, he and his wife started and ran successfully for many years the Slalom Ski Lodge in Wilmington. He had worked at the Lauzon Machine Shop in Bennington and later at G.S. Precision Company in Wilmington, retiring in 1989. Mr. Schneider was a devoted husband who enjoyed living life and spending time with his family, he had always enjoyed downhill and cross-country skiing, walking on the beach and working in the garden.

He is survived by his wife Maria (Aschauer) Schneider, whom he married Oct. 8, 1955 in Switzerland; two sons Marcel Robert Schneider of Munich, Germany and Roland Norman Schneider of Wilmington. The funeral mass will be held on July 12 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Fatima Church. Memorial gifts may be made to Our Lady of Fatima Church in care of the Covey & Allen Funeral Home, P.O.
