READSBORO -- Mr. Warner Wright Wheeler, 87, of East Main Street died Friday evening, Dec. 26, 2003 at the Crescent Manor Nursing Home in Bennington where he was admitted on Dec. 19.

He was born in Readsboro on July 29, 1916 a son of the late Wilmer Wheeler and Flora May (Jarvais) Wheeler. He attended schools in Readsboro including the former Readsboro High School.

Mr. Wheeler was employed for 47 years by the former Deerfield Glassine Co. in Monroe Bridge, Mass. He later worked for the town of Readsboro Cemetery Department and was a fireman in the former Readsboro Chair Factory. Mr. Wheeler was last employed as a transfer-station operator for the town of Readsboro, where he was employed at the time of his death.

Mr. Wheeler was a member of the Readsboro Baptist Church where he was a former deacon and trustee of the church. He was an honorary member of the Readsboro Historical Society. He enjoyed fly-fishing and rabbit hunting.

Survivors include his wife the former Wilma Ethel Bird, whom he married on Dec. 19, 1945 in Brattleboro; one son and daughter-in-law, William W. and Karen Wheeler of Readsboro, with whom he made his home; five step-grandchildren, Heather Underhill of Whitingham; Kate Puvah of Halifax, Lisa Underhill, of Whitingham, Shannon Durfey of Virginia, and Robert Durfey of Dover, N.H.; four step-great-grandchildren; two stepsons and daughters-in-law, Ronald E. and Carol Durfey of West Chesterfield, N.H., Robert E. and Janice Durfey of Jacksonville; one sister, Violet Ingalls of Readsboro; nieces and nephews, four brothers and two sisters are deceased.

Funeral Services for Warner W. Wheeler are private. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Village Cemetery in Readsboro. Memorial contributions may be made to the Readsboro Historical Society or to Crescent Manor Nursing Home in care of Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home For Funerals Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, MA 01247, which is in charge of arrangements.
