BENNINGTON -- Dr. Willard E. Goyette, 89, a resident of Rice Lane in Bennington, died peacefully Sunday evening Dec. 9, 2007 at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield, Mass.

Dr. Goyette was born in Springfield, Mass. on Sept. 27, 1918 the son of the late Ernest Fred and Blanche Elise (Rivers) Goyette. He was educated in Springfield, Massachusetts’s schools, graduating from Springfield Technical High School, class of 1936. Dr. Goyette received a Bachelor’s degree in Landscape Design from Oregon State University and a Doctor of Optometry from Pacific University in Oregon. Dr. Goyette was a veteran of the United States Navy achieving the rank of Lieutenant while serving in the South Pacific during World War II where he skippered an LCT -- an amphibious landing craft, which transported troops, tanks and supplies. Following his four years of active duty, Dr. Goyette worked for the Parks Department in Oregon and was instrumental in designing some of the Oregon State Parks. He then practiced Optometry in Carpinteria, Calif. before moving to Bennington in 1960 where he practiced Optometry at 507 Main St. for twenty-five years. He was an avid antique car buff. With his wife Joyce he restored several antique cars. He was a charter member of the Green Mountain Car Club and chaired the Bennington Car Show for twelve years. He loved his family, travel, gardening, English Setters and enjoyed Lake Champlain where he had a camp. He also enjoyed bowling with the Bennington Rotary Club in his earlier years. He was a member and past President of the Bennington Rotary Club.

Dr. Goyette is survived by his wife Joyce Marie (Wright) of Bennington, to whom he married in Corvalis, Oregon on December 25, 1942. They would have celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary this Christmas Day. He is also survived by his sons: John W. Goyette and his wife Linda of Bennington, Mark A. Goyette and his wife Irene of Bennington and his daughters: Ann G. Prather and her husband Richard of Ramona, Calif., Janice K. Dubyak and her husband William of Severna Park, Md. and Susan L. Goyette of Bennington, his grandchildren: Carol and Matthew Prather, Nathan and Joshua Goyette, Grant and Thomas Dubyak, and Alex and Eric Goyette, his great grandson William Nathan Goyette and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services for Dr. Goyette will be held Friday morning December 14, 2007, at 11 am at the First United Methodist Church, 440 Main St., Bennington. At the request of the family interment will be private at Park Lawn Cemetery. There are no visiting hours.
