Obituary Condolences

BENNINGTON -- William A. Houran, 94, a resident of Beech Street, died Wednesday, March 29, 2006, at the Centers For Living and Rehabilitation, following a long illness.

Born in Bennington on Sept. 7, 1911, he was the son of the late Edward F. and Albina (LaTour) Houran. He received his education in Bennington. Mr. Houran was a U.S. Army World War II veteran.

He was married to the former Kathryn E. Briggs. Mrs. Houran died May 6, 1982.

Mr. Houran was employed for 45 years by H.T. Cushman Manufacturing Co., which later became General Interiors, and then Green Mountain Manufacturing Co.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 13 in Bennington.

An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, spending time at his camp in Woodford and working in his garden.

Survivors include a brother, Forrest Houran of Bennington; two sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law, Antoinette Houran of Bennington, Enid Houran of Port Charlotte, Fla., and Richard Hyde of Bennington; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and cousins. Mr. Houran was predeceased by a sister and three brothers, Medora Hyde, Vernet, Edward and Lawrence Houran and a very special niece, Shirley Maguire.

The funeral will be held from the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Monday, April 3, 2006, at 12 p.m. with the Mother Anita Schell Lambert, rector of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, officiating.

Friends may call at the Mahar & Son Funeral Home Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. when the family will be in attendance.

Burial will take place in the family lot in Park Lawn Cemetery.

If friends desire, contributions in memory of Mr. Houran may be made to the charity of one’s choice through the office of the Mahar & Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT.
