William Francis Berard

1929 - 2014 BENNINGTON William Francis Berard, 84, a resident of Burgess Road, died Saturday, July 5, 2014 at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. He was born in Bennington on Aug. 10, 1929, and was the son of the late Ephrem and Marguerite (Roy) Berard. He received his education at Sacred Heart School and was a graduate of Bennington High School. Bill had served in the Army. Bill had been a member of the Bennington Moose Lodge # 1233 for over fifty years, held all offices and was a Past Governor. He was also a member of the American Legion Post # 13 of Bennington. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, reading and doing puzzle books. On Feb. 26, 1949, he married the former Virginia "Ginny" Stratton. They have been married for 65 years. Survivors besides his wife "Ginny" include his children, son, Steve and his wife, Dawn Berard of St. Johnsbury; daughter, Jean Berard of Bennington; son, Bill and his wife, Charleene Berard of Pownal; daughter, Susan and her husband, Roy Sanders of Mississippi; son, Thomas and his wife Bonnie Berard of Bennington; daughter, Esther McGarvin of Bennington; son, Michael and his wife, Kim Berard of Bennington; daughter, Deborah Berard of Bennington, and daughter, Becky and her husband Shawn Legacy of Shaftsbury. He leaves 20 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. He also has one Uncle Francis "Pete" Roy and his wife Diane, one nephew, one niece and many cousins. He was predeceased by one daughter, Catherine; by one son, Joseph; by two granddaughters, Jody and Kristi, and by one sister, Bernadette. FUNERAL NOTICE: Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 9, 2014, at the MAHAR AND SON FUNERAL HOME in Bennington at 3 p.m. with his grandson, the Rev. Damian J. Legacy, officiating. Interment will follow in the family lot in White Chapel Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital through the Mahar and Son Funeral Home, 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.
